my 5 year old step son and i are very close but his mom is a very angry and manipulitive person and makes everyday a fight and i can see the insecurities developing in the 5 year old. i would like to counter act this but not sure how, any advice is welcome.

I would suggest prayer. Children don't have to pleasure of chosing their parents like we chose our mates. Surely there is something good in this women, yes? I'm not sure what 5 year old wouldn't be insecure when their lives are so changed with divorce and marriage. There is so much more to the story that is not answered in your post, so I would suggest staying neutral and try to be this 5 year olds biggest fan!!!
